Schenck SmartBalancer ECO Field Balancing
How field balancing works
The ECO uses vibration sensors and an optical tachometer/reference pickup to determine the amplitude and phase of rotor vibration. The operator first measures the original vibration, then the instrument guides the user through a test-weight run and calculates the required correction weight and position.
It can store influence coefficients, making subsequent trim or repeat balancing considerably easier.
Vibration analysis capability
Although primarily a field balancer rather than a full advanced vibration analyzer, it also provides:
- Overall vibration measurement
- FFT frequency spectra
- Amplitude/phase measurement
- Speed measurement
- Polar/vector plots
- Automatic peak identification
- Averaging
- Reference signal display
This makes it useful for determining whether a vibration problem is likely associated with 1× rotational-frequency unbalance before performing balancing.
Typical applications
The SmartBalancer ECO is suitable for field balancing of equipment such as:
- Fans and blowers
- Pumps
- Motors
- Electric generators
- Compressors
- Spindles
- Rotating shafts
- Industrial rotors
- Ventilation equipment
- Other rotating machinery
Schenck specifically describes field balancing as useful for correcting imbalance caused by dirt deposits, wear, minor damage, installation effects, and other operating influences.
Standard equipment
The package includes the SmartBalancer ECO instrument, two 100 mV/g acceleration sensors, an optical Class A reference pickup, magnetic sensor bases, sensor cables/extensions, optical-sensor cables, magnetic stand, charger and carrying case.
SmartBalancer ECO vs. SmartBalancer 4
The ECO is positioned as a cost-effective, simpler field-balancing solution, while the newer SmartBalancer 4 is the more advanced instrument. The SmartBalancer 4 can provide up to 6 measurement channels, simultaneous overall/FFT measurements during balancing, and more advanced vibration-analysis functions.
In short: the SmartBalancer ECO is best viewed as a portable 1-/2-plane dynamic field balancer with basic FFT/vibration-analysis capability, rather than a full-featured condition-monitoring analyzer.
