What it can measure

The PM-600 is particularly useful for:

  • Locating reinforcement bars beneath concrete
  • Determining rebar spacing
  • Measuring concrete cover depth
  • Estimating rebar diameter
  • Mapping reinforcement in single-line or area scans
  • Identifying reinforcement orientation
  • Recording inspection data for later review

It works by generating electromagnetic fields and detecting the response from conductive reinforcement. Non-conductive concrete itself does not significantly affect the measurement, but nearby conductive/ferromagnetic objects can.

Important limitations

For a used PM-600, these are particularly important:

1. Rebar diameter is not automatically reliable at deep cover.
Diameter determination is limited to roughly 63 mm cover, and neighboring bars need sufficient separation.

2. Closely spaced reinforcement can cause errors.
The instrument has a neighboring-bar correction function, but there are still minimum spacing limitations.

3. Welded mesh requires special consideration.
The PM-600 is calibrated around conventional reinforcement with non-stainless steel bars connected by binding wire. Welded mesh can produce different signals and require an appropriate apparent-diameter setting.

4. Other metal nearby can interfere.
Metallic objects within the probe’s effective field can affect readings. This includes pipes, conduits, steel plates, other reinforcement layers, and even metal objects carried by the operator.

If you’re evaluating a used PM-600

I would pay particular attention to:

  1. Probe + probe cable — make sure the PM-6 probe is included and communicates correctly with the touchscreen.
  2. Scan cart — useful for systematic area/line scanning; check wheels and encoder operation.
  3. Battery — these instruments are now relatively old, so battery condition is important.
  4. Touchscreen — check for dead spots, poor calibration, damaged digitizer and screen brightness.
  5. Rebar detection test — test it over a known reinforcement bar and verify that the signal/center indication follows the bar.
  6. Cover measurement — compare against a known cover depth if possible.
  7. Diameter measurement — test against known-diameter reinforcement at shallow cover.
  8. Data storage/USB/Ethernet — verify that measurement files can be saved and transferred.
  9. Firmware/software — determine exactly which Profometer software/firmware version is installed before buying.
  10. Accessories — original power supply, battery, probe cable, scan cart and carrying case can make a substantial difference to the practical value of a used unit.

The original documentation lists the PM-6 universal probe, scan cart, probe cables, touchscreen, battery, power supply and USB cable as system components/accessories.
