Standard Kit contents
The Standard/Basic package is generally supplied with:
- PortalCam scanner
- Removable battery
- Tripod
- Battery charger/cable
- Smartphone holder
- Protective cover/case
- Carrying/storage equipment
There is some package variation between sellers, particularly regarding the charger/power adapter, so the actual dealer bundle should be checked before purchase.
How it works
1. Capture → Walk naturally through the environment while PortalCam records LiDAR and camera data.
2. Process → XGRIDS’ LCC software processes the capture into a spatial model, including photorealistic 3D Gaussian Splatting output.
3. Use → The resulting data can be used for digital twins, virtual tours, architecture/construction documentation, real estate, heritage documentation, virtual production, and AR/VR applications.
Important distinction
PortalCam is not simply a conventional survey-grade LiDAR scanner. It is designed around rapid visual-spatial capture and 3DGS, combining LiDAR geometry with photographic information. For applications requiring strict surveying accuracy, control networks, or engineering-grade point-cloud accuracy, its suitability should be evaluated separately from its impressive capture speed and visual output.
XGRIDS currently lists the PortalCam package with different software/package options, including Basic and Premium configurations.
Bottom line: PortalCam is particularly interesting when the goal is to rapidly turn a real environment into an immersive, photorealistic 3D digital asset, rather than merely producing a conventional point cloud.
